In 2008, India witnessed one of the most explosive political exposés in its democratic history — the IBN7 Cash for Vote Sting Operation. This sting operation shook the very foundation of parliamentary ethics and trust. What was supposed to be a routine vote of confidence in the Parliament, turned into a political scandal that exposed how MPs were allegedly being bribed to vote in favor of the UPA Government.
The incident unfolded during the critical period when the United Progressive Alliance (UPA-I) government, led by Dr. Manmohan Singh, was seeking a vote of confidence in Parliament. The reason for the vote stemmed from political turmoil over the controversial Indo-US Nuclear Deal, which had caused the Left parties to withdraw support from the UPA government.
With numbers becoming crucial for the government’s survival, political maneuvering reached its peak.
On 22nd July 2008, during the live parliamentary session, the entire nation was stunned when three BJP MPs — Ashok Argal, Faggan Singh Kulaste, and Mahavir Bhagora — waved bundles of cash, amounting to ₹1 crore, claiming that it was part of a bribe offered to them by agents acting on behalf of the ruling Congress-led coalition.
What made this even more sensational was the fact that the BJP MPs collaborated with IBN7 (now part of News18 India) to conduct a sting operation and record the alleged bribery attempt. The sting involved secret video footage of negotiations and payments meant to influence MPs’ votes.
The footage, later aired by CNN-IBN (English counterpart of IBN7), purportedly showed middlemen and political aides engaging with MPs and allegedly offering money to secure votes. While the authenticity and legality of the sting were debated, the visual of MPs holding cash inside Parliament was enough to shock the conscience of the nation.
The UPA government narrowly survived the confidence vote, but the scandal refused to die down.
The government and the accused parties denied all wrongdoing, claiming the sting was a politically motivated attempt by the opposition to derail the government.
The case went on for several years, involving various court hearings, police investigations, and political debates. Several arrests and chargesheets were filed, but the case slowly lost public attention over time.
While the sting successfully exposed the alleged corruption involved in parliamentary voting, it also opened up debates on:
Even today, many view the IBN7 Cash for Vote Sting as a reminder of how fragile and compromised democratic processes can become under the influence of money and power.
The 2008 sting operation by IBN7 remains one of the most talked-about and debated sting operations in India. It not only exposed the dirty underbelly of Indian politics but also forced the media, judiciary, and civil society to reflect on the state of democracy in the country.
Though the legal outcome may have been inconclusive, the image of MPs holding cash in the Parliament is etched in the collective memory of the Indian public.
